The leader of South Africa’s Democratic Alliance (DA) party will resign in April following intense backlash over his handling of a severe agricultural crisis and damaging personal financial revelations.

John Steenhuisen has announced his impending departure as the head of the Democratic Alliance (DA), triggering a potentially polarizing succession battle. The 49-year-old agriculture minister’s decision comes as the center-right party navigates its unprecedented role within South Africa’s coalition government alongside the African National Congress (ANC).

The DA, which traditionally draws support from white, Indian, and mixed-race voters, has positioned itself as a transparent alternative to the long-ruling ANC. However, Steenhuisen’s leadership has been critically undermined by recent controversies, alienating core constituencies, particularly the agricultural sector.

Agricultural Failures and Debt Disclosures

Steenhuisen has faced severe condemnation from the farming community over the government’s failure to control a devastating foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Theo de Jager, executive chair of the Southern African Agri Initiative (SAAI), noted that critics of Steenhuisen’s response are frequently “pushed out, excluded, isolated, targeted, and treated with suspicion.”

Further damaging his public standing, the Daily Maverick reported that Steenhuisen was subject to a default court judgment regarding nearly 150,000 rand ($9,400) in unpaid credit card debt, despite his lucrative government salary. While Steenhuisen maintained his personal finances were irrelevant unless tied to corruption, the revelation severely damaged the DA’s reputation for financial prudence.

Internal Purges

The financial scandal unfolded concurrently with the controversial dismissal of Environment Minister Dion George. While conservationists praised George for his strict anti-poaching stance and opposition to captive lion breeding, he was removed from his post. The EMS Foundation condemned the firing as a “political execution,” accusing Steenhuisen of aligning with the wildlife-breeding sector.

George subsequently resigned from the DA, alleging his removal was a smear campaign. He also disclosed that he had confiscated Steenhuisen’s party-issued credit card due to unreconciled expenses for hotels and food delivery. A DA internal inquiry later cleared Steenhuisen, stating the expenses were adequately explained and reimbursed.

Analysts suggest the coalition dynamics ultimately forced Steenhuisen’s hand. Khanyi Magubane noted that while voters expected the DA to maintain its hardline opposition policies within the government, the party has instead appeared increasingly aligned with the ANC.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis is currently viewed as the frontrunner to succeed Steenhuisen at the upcoming April congress.
